Planning game time together, from start to finish

Practical ideas for agreeing on game time, joining in for a moment and helping your child move on to the next part of the day.

Agree on an activity before you begin

Before opening the game, ask your child what they'd like to try. You could agree to prepare one dish and have a look at it together. This gives you a clear point to talk about when you're ready to finish, rather than making the end of the game a surprise.

Spend a little time alongside your child

Spend a few moments beside your child and ask about the ingredients they've picked or the next step. There's no need to put every choice right. Let them tell you about their plan and show you what they particularly enjoy.

Mention the next activity in advance

Give your child a reminder before it's time to close the app. Where your plans allow, leave room to finish the current step. Suggest something specific to do afterwards, such as drawing the dish or inventing a name for a make-believe café.

Find what fits your household

If finishing is difficult, try agreeing on a smaller activity next time and stay alongside your child as they move on. Adapt the plan to your family's routine. These are suggestions for shared family time, rather than screen-time allowances for particular ages.
